Instructions is a choral song cycle born from a year of profound personal loss, transformation, and spiritual exploration. Inspired by James McCrae’s Instructions Before Visiting Earth, the work emerged from an unconventional creative collaboration in which seven AI writing models reimagined the original poem, and I selected, assembled, and shaped their contributions into a new five-part libretto before composing the music. Through Dream of Gravity, Beyond the Storm, Calm Waters, Passing Clouds, and A Guest Upon This Earth, the cycle reflects on the fragility of human existence, the impermanence of our experiences, and the possibility of finding peace through acceptance. It also explores the evolving relationship between human creativity and artificial intelligence, offering a glimpse into a future in which both may participate in the artistic process.
